Kraak & Smaak Preview

Kraak & Smaak will be at Mojito’s on Friday, July 27, at 11 p.m.. Admission is $10; call 398-1120 or visit http://mojitosf.com for info.

“I’m pretty shit hot on the Fender Rhodes,” boasts Dutch production trio Kraak & Smaak’s prodigious keyboardist Oscar de Jong, and good golly is he right. As North Beach Jazz Fest blasts into the future, de Jong and DJ band-mates Wim Plug and Mark Knepper fire the jets with an eclectic sound that once landed them a set between Snoop Dogg and The Beastie Boys. The alleged influence of Kraftwerk, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Joy Division merges seamlessly with laid back funk beats and a trippy synth vibe reminiscent of the Blade Runner soundtrack. And if you’ve never heard of Holland’s favorite funk group, don’t be fooled by their druggy name, which translates as “crunchy and tasty”. Far from freebasing it, these fun-loving dudes will give you the courage to soberly channel your inner James Brown while thinking fondly of a recent sexcapade. Unfortunately, you’ll have to hop over to Europe to catch a primo instrumental performance, but the DJ set is sure to be outstanding as well.
