From his early days with the legendary John Coltrane Quartet to the decades spent leading his own bands, McCoy Tyner ranks among the most elite and widely respected jazz pianists in history. It's somewhat odd, then, that his new album is titled Guitars — although with fret-dancing turns by Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, and Bela Fleck, the album may help introduce a younger generation to Tyner's genius. Marc Ribot (who has played with everyone from Tom Waits & John Zorn to The Black Keys & Foetus) will also be touring with Tyner this fall, augmenting the regular McCoy Tyner Trio for a string of dates at Yoshi's in Oakland; click here for details about these Nov. 18-23 shows. Coincidentally, Bela Fleck will be performing with his Flecktones at the San Francisco Yoshi's during the exact same time span; information about those shows can be found here. Meanwhile, Bill Frisell is playing across the Bay this very weekend. My, these boys sure are busy. — J. Graham
