Muni Diaries (Friday)
There are some serious stories to tell about
riding public transit in this city. Muni is little more than a
microcosm of our daily lives --people, eat, sleep, dry hump, and piss on our trains, as documented
by the folks over at the Muni Diaries.
Tales of berserk bus rides are so much better told over a couple
cocktails, and tonight MD
hosts "Riders with Drinks" at the Make-Out Room. (7:30-9:30 p.m., free)
Hesher: Metal Karaoke and Air Guitar Contest (Friday)
With the big fancy U.S. Air Guitar championships just two weeks away, rocker wanna-bes need their practice on the ol' invisible instruments. Luckily
San Francisco has a home grown (i.e. budget) version of the pantomime
your best "o"-face and arm-mill moves. The winner won't get sent to
Finland, but do enough high kicks without warming up and you could get
a free trip to SF General. (9 p.m., $5).
Mellow/No So Mellow and Cool, Calm & Collected (Friday)
When you're done taking photos of the Haight/Ashbury street signs on Friday night duck, into RVCA
Skinner. Supposedly, drinks are on the house. (4-7 p.m., free). Then
you can head down to Lower Haight for another art show, this one at Lower Hater Gallery with
and the US, seven in all (7-11p.m., free)
Al Queda (Friday)
The CIA doesn't have to look too hard to find Al Queda this weekend. They're gonna be at the Argus, dude, dropping noise bombs alongside some lo-fi fuzz from Sleepy Beach, ambient pop from Universe, and subdued, folsky tunes from Austin's Cloud Craft. (9 p.m., $5)
Doowutchyalike's 2-Year Anniversary (Saturday)
We're not sure it's even humanly possible to have 14 DJs each perform 30 minute sets in the time allotted for Doowutchyalike's second anniversary party at Poleng, but hey, you can't argue about not getting enough local talent with this bill. Vinyl hounds from Quannum, Distortion 2 Static, Papalote Hi-Fi, and more spin lots and lotsa hip-hop while two emcees handle mic duties at the cozy Western Addition club. (10 p.m., $5 before 11 p.m.)
AJ Fosik Art Show (Saturday)
Who needs 3-D movies when you can check out some 3-D art? AJ Fosik's show at White Walls opens
on Saturday, and it looks pretty sweet. From the photos we've seen,
it's like a pop-up book come to life. In a gallery. And stuff. (7-11
O.K. Hole (Saturday)
Amnesia is one of the Mission's most eclectic live music venues, from free
bluegrass Mondays to gypsy jazz on Fridays. Tonight the red-lit dive focuses on the
beats, when DJ C.L.A.W.S.
Muscle Drum. Although there's no stated theme to the music tonight,
we'd expect lots of left-field techno, danceable krautrock, and other
cutting edge grooves from this bunch. ($4, 10 p.m.)
Chillin Anniversary Party (Saturday)
If you like your parties more on the grand scale, Mezzanine is hosting a big birthday bash for Chillin Productions. This gig includes 180 painters and photographers, 80 fashion designers, and 8 DJs (including our local superstar production duo, Rondo Brothers). (8 p.m., $7)
Haight St. Fair (Sunday)
The Haight St. Fair brings
the street party back to that 'hood just a couple weeks after Bay to
Breakers--only this time, no one's pretending to be an athlete.
Unfortunately there's no info on the full lineup of bands playing, but luckily we can give you one musical recommendation from the
event. After checking out Leopold and His Fiction
a couple weeks back, we suggest hitting the Haight mob around 2:30
p.m., when the band will apparently bring its bloozy, garagey
rock to the Masonic St. stage. (Tussle performs on the same stage at 3 p.m.) The fair goes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
Other notable cheap thrills:
Free Funk Fridays with Vinnie Esparza at the Elbo Room (9 p.m., free); Oh La La's '60s Dance Party at the Paradise on Saturday ($5 before 11 p.m., $7 after); the Papercuts play a free in-store at Amoeba on Saturday (2 p.m.)
p.s. If you live in the Castro, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights or the Haight, you get free entry to the Cal Academy of Sciences this weekend, June 12-14.
p.s.s. Only one more week until we get to see the Moon! Directed by Bowie's son. We're pretty damn excited.
