Gene Loves Jezebel @ The Knockout

You may not have to go all the way back to the landmark case of Cain v. Abel to find two brothers more antagonistic than twin siblings Jay and Michael Aston of Gene Loves Jezebel, but the Aston brothers' conflict is nevertheless epic.

During the 1980s, the two shared a starring role in the band, each bringing his own distinctive style to Jezebel's darkly melodic post-punk and glam-tinged pop. But ordinary sibling bickering eventually grew into cutthroat rivalries and tore the band apart: the boys moved to opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, started competing versions of Gene Loves Jezebel, and waged bitter fights for the rights to their once-familial legacy.

Last year, however, they reached an agreement that each band could be called the "official" Gene Loves Jezebel when touring in its own country, but would have to add a possessive proper noun -- almost like a mea culpa -- when visiting the other brother's turf. Thus tonight we see the British version of the embattled band, Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel. The amended moniker isn't the only difference between the bands, either: Jay opts for the brighter, lighter, and more polished pop of the old Jezebel sound, while Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel is more likely to isolate the gloomier goth tendencies.

For those who miss Michael's moody musical personality, resident Ceremony DJs Deadbeat & Yule Be Sorry can probably provide you with some appropriately damaged romanticism during the downtime between live sets by Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel, Sky Parade, and the Blank Tapes tonight at the Knockout. (9 p.m., $10)
