I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm completely down with the future-boogie/wonky soul thing going on right now. While it's not central to the Los Angeles area--B. Bravo reps San Francisco and artists like Krystal Klear doing the thing out in Europe--many of these producers appear to be harbored in Southern California. The latest blip on my funk radar is LA's Devonwho. Not only is this young beatsmith unafraid of shoving his words all together, but is also adept at shoving together head-nodding beats, soulful synth melodies, and funky basslines into shimmering cuts of otherworldly R&B.
Devonwho's efforts are well represented on the aptly titled "Keepthefunkalive." A
stuttering, slap-heavy beat ushers in the kind of thick atmosphere familiar to a DâM-FunK number, which is quickly followed by the track's hook performed by a few more vintage synths. The whole piece lasts just under three minutes, but it gives you plenty of time to soak in the soulful vibes and slide right into Devonwho's brilliant groove. Check out more of this producer's new works when it comes out shortly on Ireland's All City label.
