Plenty of turntable junkies claim DJing is in their blood. But DJ Platurn's love for the dancefloor actually was passed down through family lines. The Icelandic music head grew up the son of a DJ, so by the time he moved to Oakland he was ready to spin on his own. He's been a regular at Luka's Tap Room for so long he's become an East Bay fixture, repping the local scene no matter the crowd.

Name: DJ Platurn | Oakland Faders

Club night(s): I'm all over, but my main residency is first and third Fridays at Luka's Tap Room in downtown Oakland, the longest-running and most successful old-school music party in the East Bay--going on six years, yo!

Style(s) of music you spin: All things funky!

So what's your story, in 100 words or less? Son of a DJ. Moved to America from Iceland in '83. Bought Run DMC's Raising Hell in '86. Started DJing in '94. Can't stop buying records to this day. I love making people dance to music they had no idea they liked.

Despite the Viking roots, I'm a Cali kid to the core and Oakland 'til I die. I love good beer and my girl's food. I'm a big fan of those passionate and excellent at their craft. I'm always down to build and trade music. I travel the world, but I'm spoiled by the Bay.

How often do you get back to Iceland to DJ? Not nearly as much as I'd like to--once every three years maybe.

Name of a track you can't get out of your head: Motherlode's "When I Die"

Name of an artist you're currently championing in your DJ sets: DJ B. Cause's edits/remixes.

Name of a current favorite track for the peak of your set: Kid Cut Up's remix of Snoop's "I Wanna Rock" - if you don't know it, look it up.
