Public Collectors is working on a really cool project that spotlights a small detail of what's being lost amongst so many invisible MP3s. The site is making a list of the messages bands have "pressed into the matrix of their vinyl" over the years. Apparently these little notes appear near the label at the center of the record (see the image above), and so far Public Collectors' findings are very entertaining.

Alongside subliminal lines from the Clash, Shellac, Soundgarden, Run DMC, and a host of other names both legendary and underground, a couple Bay Area artists made the cut. (Apparently the Dead Kennedys were really into carving these famous last words into their recordings). The locals on Messages in the Matrices of Records:

Dead Kennedys - "Fresh Fruits For Rotting Vegetables (Cherry Red)

Side A: IS LIFE AS BORING AS YOU ARE?

Side B: WELL??? WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE?

Dead Kennedys - "Frankenchrist" (Alternative Tentacles)

Side A: The Full Rich Flavor of Stark Reality

Side B: To Cope is to Cop Out

Dead Kennedys - "Bedtime For Democracy" (Alternative Tentacles)

Side A: JOHN SOOPES DIED FOR YOUR SINS

Side B: "POWER IS THE ULTIMATE APHRODISIAC" - HENRY KISSINGER

Dead Kennedys - "Give Me Convenience..."

Side A: The skull is "the smiling face" of the 80's

Side B: Dolphins make better anarchists than people do

Fuck - "Pardon My French" (Matador)

Side A: Nothing, Really

Side B: No, Really, Nothing

High on Fire - "Blessed Black Wings" (Relapse)

Side A: trutone nyc-pa

Side B: Pleasures treasures leave me hypnotised

Side C: Quench your thirst and drink this bottle

Side D: Drive the fist into your face

But the best of the bunch were totally smartass or totally strange...
