R.I.P. Lena Horne

Posted By on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 7:45 AM

Jazz legend Lena Horne has died at age 92. She made history for her striking, velvety voice, but also for the way she broke across the color barrier in the music industry while speaking out constantly about the racism she experienced.

Below is a video of Horne singing "Stormy Weather." During the era this clip was shot, the singer was making a lot of firsts: the AP reports she was one of the first black singers hired to perform with a big-name white band, the first to play the Copacabana, and was among a small group of black entertainers with a Hollywood contract.

Another great clip, this one from 1965.

Horne was also pretty good at giving out advice on Sesame Street...

...and making Kermit feel better about being green.
