A few times a week, we here at SF Weekly
get e-mails from publicists asking if we want to interview some actor or author who is in town plugging a film or book. We ignore or delete those e-mails most of the time. What can we say? We're jaded media people who don't appreciate how cool it would be to interview someone famous.
But we got to thinking. "You know who would love to interview celebrities on promotional junkets?" we asked ourselves. "Normal people not in the media i.e. members of the star-fucking public."
So when McSweeney's informed us that Judd Apatow, the guy who wrote and directed 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, was going to be in town plugging the new book he edited, I Found This Funny: My Favorite Pieces of Humor and Some That May Not Be Funny At All , we got an idea: "What if we had a contest to let one of our readers interview Judd Apatow?" To our surprise (and delight), Apatow and the people at McSweeney's were willing to play along.
So, dear readers, here is your chance to meet and interview someone who's not only famous, but interesting and funny. Hey, he was on Fresh Air
, so he's gotta be, right? Here's how the contest will work:
Send us three questions you'd like to ask Mr. Apatow. The person who we think asks the best questions wins! The winner will come down to our offices on Thursday Oct. 7 and interview Judd in person. We'll run a video and transcript of the interview on All Shook Down for all the Internet to see. Email the questions to: firstname.lastname@example.org
We must receive your questions by
Thursday Sept. 30
Friday Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. You can ask whatever you want in your contest entries, although the winner will be required to talk to Judd about his book because that's the way show biz works people. Deal with it.
Here are a few other contest rules and requirements you should take heed of:
- No journalists or film critics can enter. The point of the contest is to give non-media people -- i.e. normal people -- a chance to do the interview. We reserve the right to disqualify anyone else we deem a ringer.
- You'll need to be able to come in on a weekday to do the interview. Working folk take note.
- You must live in the Bay Area, which will obviously make it easier for you to come to our office for the interview.
- Please include your phone number in your contest submission so we can contact you.
Well, that just about does it. If you don't feel like e-mailing us questions, go ahead and tell us what you'd ask Judd Apatow in the comments section below. We'll announce the winner on Monday Oct. 4.
