I've been a fan of Nottingham-based producer Matt Cutler (a.k.a. Lone) for about a year now. I was initially turned onto his music through 2009's woozy, sun-soaked beatscape Ecstasy & Friends, which Cutler released on Werk Discs. As Lone, the tunesmith incorporated some of electronic music's most infectious sounds -- shiny synth melodies, vintage samples, and herk-jerky beats -- into one brilliantly soulful style. But things have changed a bit for Lone as of late. After Cutler started his own record label, Magic Wire, he revealed a fresh approach to Lone, and started writing dance songs informed by classic rave music.

You can say what you will about the days of rave and, of course, ravers themselves, but the music is making a serious comeback in the contemporary dance scene. Albums like Zomby's Where Were U in '92, some of Hercules & Love Affair's clubby numbers, and Lone's new tracks "Pineapple Crush" and "Angel Brain" are just the beginning of the return of the '90s underground dance party aesthetic. As promo for an upcoming party at the XOYO club in London, Lone put together an excellent DJ set "inspired by rave-era 'hardcore stuff'" -- the exact style I've been talking about. I highly suggest you check out XOYO Mix 04: Lone, and the accompanying interview, here. Let the awesome mix of music take your weekend to new heights.
