Sometimes it's good just to remember what elastic, corner-bending rhythms and interplanetary mindfuck soundscapes can be achieved through the use of machines. One of the guests on S.F. groove guru Mophono's
(aka DJ Centipede's) upcoming album, Flying Lotus
, is now very famous for reminding us of the immense rhythmic power of the button and the knob; with "Be Human Part One," this first track from the full-length, Mophono does a canny demonstration of his own skills on the turntables.
The track begins with a basic R&B beat that shortly starts meandering into jazzy, labyrinthine fills. Soon, synth pulses give way to a flute, which joins in the wandering, and from there this track goes all sorts of places. Certainly, memories of DJ Shadow -- whose Endtroducing is cited by Mophono as a big influence -- are being jogged here. The extended sax passages give a sophisto-feel to the whole thing, but what really hits us about this cut is the expert rhythm work.
This track is the opener from Mophono's full-length debut, Cut From Crush
, which is due on his own imprint, CB Records
, on February 15 of next year. Mophono/Centipede is also a regular at the (free) weekly Change the Beat
party he throws every Tuesday at Som Bar
