Not content with merely throwing a Video Music Awards show (maybe because the channel doesn't actually show videos anymore?), MTV is moving into the Internet culture space with a new awards show called the OMAs.So what does the "O" stand for? Apparently it's up to you to decide -- MTV wants to encourage audience participation.
The show, which is to air on April 28, will "honor the migration of music to the digital space, and celebrate the art, artistry and technology of digital music," according to MTV and the AP. What that means is that MTV is going to create a bunch of arbitrary categories and fill them with groundless nominees. According to the AP, "Categories could include things like best app and best Kanye West tweet." Oh, and you'll get to help vote for the winner, which basically means Justin Bieber is winning EVERYTHING.
It's not like a lot of other awards shows aren''t groundless and arbitrary, but at least they don't pretend that the Internet is some appendage not already at the center of music culture. But on that note, I'm off to start voting for Lil B in any category I can.
