Not every TV appearance warrants a note, but this one sure does: tUnE-yArDs, the Oakland-based art-pop project of one supremely talented lady by the name of Merrill Garbus, will make its late-night TV debut tonight. This is but the latest in a breakthrough year for Garbus and tUnE-yArDs, following the release of stunning sophomore album w h o k i l l in April. We're so proud we're going to stay up late and watch her play. Are you?

tUnE-yArDs will be the musical guest on tonight's episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which airs at the wee hour of 12:35 a.m. Garbus and her band won't be on until quite a while after that, though: You'll have to sit through a jelly doughnut shootout (whatever that is) with Glee's Cory Monteith and an interview with former CNN host Lou Dobbs before you get to watch tUnE-yArDs do its thing.

That said, having seen its sold-out show at the Great American a few months back, we bet the band's first TV appearance will be worth losing a little sleep over.

Your next chance to see tUnE-yArDs locally in person is Sunday, August 14, at the Outside Lands festival.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
