Whitney Houston, the era-defining superstar who was the first woman to have an album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, died Saturday afternoon, according to the AP. Houston was 48.

Houston's body was found in the fourth floor of her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel, according to AP. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Saturday. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said the cause of death was unknown.

Houston was a hugely popular singer whose career peaked in the '80s and '90s before she slipped into a cycle of drug abuse and strange behavior that marred her public image. She was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, shifting more than 170 million albums worldwide. She won six Grammys.

Houston was truly a music icon, gifted with an incredibly powerful and rich voice and sparkling looks. "I Will Always Love You," a song she contributed to the soundtrack of 1992's the Bodyguard -- her first film role -- is just one of many classics we'll remember her for:

Rest in peace, Whitney.
