There's a pretty unusual concert going down tonight (Thursday, Sept. 27) at Great American Music Hall, to celebrate the birthday of Third Eye Blind frontman (and S.F. resident) Stephan Jenkins.

Classical Revolution, the chamber music ensemble that jams, will be performing special one-off sets with S.F. artists. Their collaborators include both the very well-known (yes, Third Eye Blind!), the locally well-known (string-metal outfit Judgement Day), and some other groups you may not know but should: Mark Matos, Jherek Bischoff, Wildhawk and more.

"This came together because I was chatting with Stephan Jenkins about doing a big show with orchestra, and he suggested, 'Why don't we do it for my birthday party and have Third Eye Blind play?' says Classical Revolution founder Charith Premawardhana. From there, Premawardhana recruited a number of his favorite local artists to play as well. The concert ties in with a month-long festival where Classical Revolution has been performing different kinds of music in more than 20 venues around the Bay Area.

"The groups will be playing largely their own compositions, with some songs played by the bands themselves and some pieces with augmented string sections made up of our Classical Revolution players," Premawardhana says.

He says the show is just a one-off for now, but he'd like to do more similar events in the future. Jenkins -- who's been nice enough to donate his time to other local goings-on in the past -- has a birthday every year, so here's hoping.
