It's true, New Year's Eve is rapidly approaching, but just because the big day is around the corner doesn't mean you have to conserve your energy. To help you get out of your post-Christmas stupor, we've put together this list of recommended upcoming events. Consider it the nightlife equivalent to calisthenics. Read on -- your weekend awaits.

5. Odyssey w/ David Harness @ Public Works OddJob Loft
Friday, Dec. 28, 9:30 p.m.-3:30 a.m.

It's been a while now since Odyssey emerged from the underground and began throwing parties at Public Works. In that stretch of time it's managed to transport its respectful loft party vibe to a more legal context. This Friday marks the last edition of the year and like many other installments, this one features DJs pulled from the local community. Headlining it is David Harness, the tireless Bay Area house music promoter who's been responsible for some of the best parties of the last 20 years. Listen to "Dancing and Singing," a mix recorded live from the board at his "Taboo" party. Vienetta's Stanley Frank and Odyssey resident DJ Robin Simmons round out the bill alongside Donovan's excellent LightsOut Lightshow.

4. Free Party with Dam Funk @ 1015 Folsom
Friday, Dec. 28, 10 p.m.-3 a.m.

It's hard to argue with free. This Friday 1015 Folsom will be hosting a major no-cover event featuring the talents of Los Angeles "boogie funk" revivalist Dam Funk. He's been a favorite in San Francisco ever since he first began playing here as an occasional distinguished guest DJ at the Sweaterfunk parties. He's come a long way since then, with a fully developed live show that brings to mind a modern take on electronically leaning R&B artists like Prince, Zapp & Roger, and Midnight Express. Get a feel for the positive message he espouses via the supremely funky "Hood Pass Intact." Also on deck are the local "electrofunk wizards" of The Starship Connection plus a handful of local DJs.

3. Sweater-Funk-Mosphere @ Elbo Room
Saturday, Dec. 29, 9 p.m.

Longstanding Sunday staple Sweaterfunk is teaming up with Funkmosphere (its sister party in LA) for a Saturday special at the Elbo Room. Though the night is different, what hasn't changed is the music, which will be an eclectic blend of '80s funk and boogie played on wax. As usual, KPOO radio personality K-Maxx will be on hand to host the affair. Get in the mood by listening to this "Sweaterfunk NYE 2012 mix" and this video preview of Funkmosphere's Monday night party at Carbon in Culver City.

2. Back2Back @ Project One
Saturday, Dec. 29, 10 p.m.-2 a.m.

A natural evolution from the Wicked Soundsystem parties of the '90s, Back2Back is a now-long-running party put together by DJs Jeno and Garth. Periodically held at different venues throughout the city, it's now celebrating its eighth anniversary at the newly remodeled Project One gallery. We're not sure exactly what it'll be like, but we imagine it'll be similar to the seven-year anniversary that we covered last year. You can be sure that you'll hear dubby breaks, garage house, and a small share of disco. Listen to this live from the board mix recorded at Project One in 2009.

1. Direct Current @ SUB/Mission
Saturday, Dec. 29, 9:30 p.m.

"Halt change. Reverse time. Destroy the clock." So begins the cryptic Facebook event description for "Direct Current," a one-off collaboration between dark SF party starters Body//Current and similarly minded Oakland crew Direct to Earth. As usual, expect to hear a blend of cutting-edge "dark house" and "deep techno" all night as the two outfits face off and collide "for a frigid blast of Black ice." Were not sure what that means exactly, but it sounds kind of fun. Mission punk venue Sub/Mission provides the stage -- a perfect place for the kind of subterranean vibe that these forms of music connote. Get a feeling for what to expect by listening to Tyler Friedman's "A Night in the Woods (Rivet Remix)," Vril's "UV," and Randomer's "Scruff Box."
