Earlier this week, Mina Caputo proved she was one of the bravest musicians alive by releasing "Identity" -- a wistful track in which the ex-Life of Agony vocalist documents the anguish she's experienced while transitioning into living as a woman full-time. Alongside the incredibly candid track, Caputo has also released an extremely intimate video, in which she frolics around in bed with a heavy metal hottie, gets her butt cheeks out and saucily plays with a whip and furry handcuffs. You go, girl!

Here's the probably-NSFW "Identity":

First of all, we want to commend Mina for being honest about her struggles here: "I am not a man, I am not a woman," she sings. "Sew me back together again." Generally, when famous trans folk come out -- because it's not something that happens with a great deal of regularity -- there is a pressure on them to keep things upbeat, indestructibly confident, and fun.

We agree that the best way to squash bigotry and rise above naysayers is to take that approach, and we agree that giving young trans folk the strength to come out has to be a carefully considered factor. But Mina's ability here, to let us in behind closed doors and allow us to understand the pain of still not feeling her whole self, is extraordinarily honest and touchingly vulnerable.

The somber and gentle nature of the track is beautifully balanced with the video itself -- which is both a joyful confirmation of Mina's unhindered femininity and an intimate expression of her sexual identity. Watching Caputo and her heavily-tattooed metal man going at it on that bed is the biggest fuck you to trans-phobic metalheads we have ever seen and are ever likely to.

Mina has been a trailblazer since she came out as trans in July 2011, paving the way for the also-astonishingly-brave Laura Jane Grace, of Against Me!. "Identity" is the very first release from Caputo since her transition and clearly, she doesn't intend to hold anything back in regards to what she's going through -- regardless of the criticism she is bound to receive from people too narrow-minded to want to empathize with her experience.

Mina Caputo's new album is titled As Much Truth As One Can Bear, and, a couple of days ago, she launched a fundraiser on to raise enough money to release and distribute it. There are samples of four tracks on the site, as well as an adorable video encouraging fans to donate. See?

Mina, we salute you, and  we can't wait to hear this album. Good luck!
