This could be really cool, if true: According to music journalist Michael Goldberg, Neil Young and Jack White have recorded an album of 12 classic covers, to be released later this year.

The release hasn't been confirmed yet, but it would make sense: Young recorded a cover of Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death" at the Third Man Records recording booth last April, for Record Store Day, and he's been performing a number of covers in recent live shows, including "Needle of Death" and Phil Ochs' "Changes." He's also been playing Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," which is another likely suspect for inclusion on the covers album.

Goldberg's report is further supported by the fact that White said earlier this month that he was producing two albums at the time, only one of which "is mine." That would be a new solo album, the follow-up to 2012's acclaimed Blunderbuss. The other, presumably, is his covers album with Young.

Rumors of this album surfaced late last year on Neil Young fan sites, according to Consequence of Sound, but Goldberg claims to have confirmation from inside Young's camp. If true, it would be the second time in recent months that a Bay Area artist has teamed up to record an album of other people's songs. Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong worked with Norah Jones on Foreverly, a collection of Everly Brothers songs that came out Nov. 25.
