This month marked the 100th Festa do Divino Espirito Santo, in Gustine, Calif., a small agricultural town in the middle of the state largely populated by immigrants from Portugal's Azores archipelago. And you can't have a Festa do Divino Espirito Santo without a bullfight capping the event.
Several days of celebrations, parades, and cattle auctions culminated on July 22 with the fight — which was marked by the unusual, but not unheard-of, occurrence of a bull leaping into the stands. Photographs by Alexia Aubault and Joe Eskenazi
