American Apparel Protest on Valencia Street

Saturday's much blogged-about American Apparel protest outside the storefront the chain plans to move into on Valencia Street had a pretty low turnout. Photographer Gretchen Robinette showed up at 10 a.m. and was the only one there. An hour later, around 10 people arrived and assembled signs that read "Honk if you oppose American Apparel" and our personal favorite, "No Hipster Scum."

Really? I mean I don't like American Apparel much but protests... And on Valencia St? I actually assumed there was already one there...

Those monsters! Are you telling me that they had the gall to rent property from a willing party, and then go into business selling products that some people might want to buy?

Are you further telling me that if I don't like the products they sell, I don't have to buy them?

Clearly, the government should do something to stop people from selling clothes that I don't like!

Let me get this straight, ATA isn't getting kicked out of their space for AA, but they're just protesting because they don't like them and don't want them moving in?

Seriously?

Hey, I don't like it when some frat guys move in near me, but I don't protest about it like I get to pick and choose my neighbors. The Haight couldn't stand having a Gap at Haight/Ashbury, but no one shopped there and now it's gone.

Hell, it's not like they're saying Craig Baldwin has to stop sleeping in the basement and start wearing American Apparel underwear.

This is not about picking and choosing neighbors. That is elitist and anybody that knows about ATA realizes that this organization is far form being elitist.

I don't know if you lived here back in 2006, but 80% of the Mission voted yes to Prop G to add restrictions to formula retail stores that want to move into our neighborhoods, and that's why there is a hearing on Thursday where the public comment is welcome.

The Republican Party, the San Francisco Association of Realtors and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce were the Opponents to this proposition. I wonder why!

"No Hipster Scum"? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I passed by around noon and saw maybe 15 white hipster guys milling around with one or two holding signs.
