UK new wave/punk band Bananarama hit The Warfield this past Wednesday, February 21st. After a thirty year career, this marked the first time the original lineup toured in North America, with the newly returned Siobhan Fahey joining constant members Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward.
Making a solid dent in their massive library of hits, and backed by a full live band, Bananarama kicked their set off with ‘Nathan Jones’, followed by fan favorites such as ‘Venus’, ‘Cruel Summer’, and ‘Love in the First Degree’. Clad in sleek, black, Swarovski crystal decorated attire, the ladies appeared like jewel thieves that had already made their score. Singing in unison and dancing in sync, Bananarama displayed a synergy that was impressive for the reformed trio.
Pop Scene co-founder DJ Omar opened the night, spinning some classic, dancefloor-friendly tracks by the likes of Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, and Henry Saiz, with the Aretha Franklin and George Michael cut ‘I Knew You Were Waiting’ especially moving peoples’ butts on the floor.
