Pussy Riot and London Jade at Rickshaw Stop, March 28, 2018

Russian feminist punk rock collective Pussy Riot performed a pair of sold-out shows at Rickshaw Stop this past Wednesday, March 28th. In contrast to their more conventional punk rock performance origins, the two touring members wielded microphones, midi controllers, and backing tracks, with the frontwoman telling the audience to consider the performance by their “fake band” to be more of a demonstration or political rally than a concert.

Pussy Riot’s set covered a lot of genre territory, with some extremely fast and stompy gabber-style tunes followed by tracks that ranged in sound from Top 40 pop, Hip Hop, and EDM. The concert was preceded by a twenty-minute clip of Noam Chomsky discussing the most recent US election.

The Chicago based trans rapper, model, and DJ, London Jade opened the night, performing tracks from her debut EP, ‘Transcendent’. Sporting a spikey outfit adorned with hundreds of zip ties, the energetic rapper dished out rhymes tackling her struggles as a trans woman, time in jail, and calling out other rappers.
