After a four year touring hiatus, the New York bred indie rock act Yeah Yeah Yeahs performed a sold out show at The Fox Theater in Oakland, this past Monday, October 30th — just one of four planned concerts for 2017 for the east coast trio.
With a performance preceded by a tour documentary, the band let the film’s closing music transition into the opening of their performance, with the emotional ‘Modern Romance’ introducing their set. Vocalist Karen O was quite still for most of the track, as were guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase.
Gears shifted with the second song, ‘Rich’, with Karen O. shedding clothing, spitting water, whipping around her microphone cord, and quickly upping the momentum of the performance. The audience were later treated to what could be considered a “Greatest Hits” setlist, with fan favorites and singles such as ‘Heads Will Roll’, ‘Pin’, and ‘Gold Lion’, spanning the act’s discography. Crowd interactions such as giant inflatable eyeballs bouncing and rolling across the audience, and blasts of confetti spiced up the night.
