Outsourcing Journalism to China

Posted By on Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 3:32 PM

Not to release more information than you care to know about us, but The Snitch is looking for part-time news writers to contribute to this blog. Fairly simple search, right? -- post ads on Craigslist and other classified ad sites, tell people we're searching for writers, interact, choose, move on. But, in response to a job ad, we received an e-mail (painfully unedited) this afternoon that made us think there might be more to consider.

Greetings from Hometown Innovation Automation Inc from Shanghai, China

We are gathering if we could help you on your porjects. Our competitive hourly rates ranges from $4 to $10

We offer the following customizable ITO and BPO services:

1. BPO Services: Online research and data entry, 24X7X365 help desks/call centers, IT-enabled back offices, administrative support, graphics and/or book design and printing among other services

2. Online-Marketing total solution, SEO, PPC among others 3. LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) technology based Website design, construction, testing and makeover.

3. LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), J2EE, Ruby on Rails based website design, development, testing and maintainence

Please open PMB so that we could show you our Value Proposition as well as our proposed customized Statement of Work (SOW)

And so on. That wouldn't be unethical, would it? -- hiring cheap labor in Shanghai to do research and design for blog posts in San Francisco? Would it? Really? Fuck.

--The Atlantic's "China Makes, The World Takes" (subscription only), and a slideshow (for everyone). Basic point: World producers can gain much from the continued economic and political opening of "the world’s manufacturing center," but they should be wary of China's developing future.

--The Rick Bragg debacle in which Bragg, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, got caught not really doing all his own research and not really crediting the freelance writers and interns who helped him gather material.

--To apply for a part-time writing (or photography) gig with The Snitch, send a resume and clips to Matt Stroud.

Update (thanks to Ragnar Carlson): Should publishers outsource journalism?
