Posted By on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 12:41 PM

Populist filmmaker Michael Moore has consistently stood with the little guy on globalization, health care, large corporations, gun violence, the Iraq War, and the presidency of U.S. President George W. Bush. But when it comes to backing of mayoral candidates in San Francisco (where Moore lived briefly during the mid-1980s while editing Mother Jones), Moore has not been consistent: he’s a flipper-flopper in the league of Karl Rove’s characterization of John Kerry.

Four years ago, Moore stood on a San Francisco State University stage before a crowd of youngsters supporting Green Party candidate Matt Gonzalez, placing a prank call to Gonzalez’ opponent, Gavin Newsom.

Last week, Moore spent the day at press events featuring -- whom else but Gavin Newsom?

In this weeks' video column, Matt Smith weaves a made-for-the-Internet conspiracy theory involving Moore, Hollywood’s Weinstein brothers, Gavin Newsom, and the international media hype industry.

Our investigation begs tough questions: does Moore’s capricious SF mayoral support record undermine the message his new movie Sicko! Is U.S. healthcare really as bad as he says? Do giant insurance companies actually pad profits at patients’ expense? Does Smith glom onto Moore’s notoriety to engage in insubstantial grandstanding? SF Weekly TV reports. You decide. -- The Snitch
