Winnie Phan, 17, Outpitches Hockey Star Dany Heatley at Giants Game

Posted By on Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 12:01 AM

Seventeen-year-old do-gooder Winnie Phan is well on her way to becoming the next Internet meme -- and she didn't even have to beat the shit out of a fellow bus passenger or generally behave crazy to do it.

No, she just had to do what she's always done: Succeed.

The photogenic 17-year-old from the Tenderloin is the state's Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year -- which earned her a spot tossing out the ceremonial first pitch before Monday's San Francisco Giants game. Alongside Phan was Dany Heatley -- the San Jose Sharks' burly goal-scorer.

As you can see above, however, while Phan shot-putted her pitch right into the catcher's mitt, Heatley uncorked a 55-footer, sending honorary catcher Barry Zito scrambling.

The video is now careening around the Web. Phan, meanwhile, was interviewed by ESPN -- an eventuality that seemed awfully remote up until yesterday.

Finally, lost in all of this is that Heatley has a good excuse -- he's a German-born Canadian, who likely grew up kicking balls and shooting pucks -- not pitching.

Phish is in the midst of a block of sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (October 27-29). The Monday night concert featured a rare first set opener of “Walfredo” with the band members switching instruments for the song. The evening’s highlights included John Fishman and his iconic vacuum cleaner solo and favorites such as Chalk Dust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light, Axilla, Rift, 2001 Space Odyssey, and Maze. The show also featured Phish’s debut of a, seemingly impromptu, version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to with roaring approval of the, singing along, crowd. With Game 6 being tonight, partying Phish fans will join Giants fans in Civic Center Plaza where there will be a World Series viewing party on a large screen set up by the City.
