Within the course of a five-paragraph endorsement -- for both Newsom and Republican incumbent Abel Maldonado -- the L.A. Times notes that Newsom "ridiculed the position" of lieutenant governor while he he was running for governor.
It also highlights the mayor's "cockiness," lack of understanding of some of the position's basic tenets, and concludes with this backhanded remark: "Newsom's task, if he prevails on June 8, will be to demonstrate in the
coming five-month campaign that he can put his talents to use as
lieutenant governor, rather than merely checking his Twitter account
regularly for news about the governor's health."
Perhaps another Shakespearian reference would have been more fitting: "A plague o' both your houses."
