Angel Island -- The Ellis Island of the west, only with lots more overt anti-Asian racism and forced detentions -- will be celebrating a birthday this weekend. The 100th anniversary of the Angel Island Immigration Station will be marked by a star-studded poetry reading on the island.

Sounds like a hell of an event. But we were confused -- as we attended the 100th anniversary of the Angel Island Immigration Station in January, which was marked by swearing in 100 new U.S. citizens in downtown San Francisco. During that event, it was announced -- repeatedly -- that Jan. 21 was the 100-year anniversary of the Angel Island Immigration Station, to the day. So, what gives?

Grant Din is the special projects director of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation -- which, he notes, rhymes. He laughed when asked how many birthdays an immigration station could have -- because his organization is planning at least two more in short order.

In addition to the anniversary celebrations of January and this weekend, Din notes that "the big centennial community celebration" will be held on July 31. But wait, there's still the anniversary celebration gala -- tentatively scheduled for Oct. 23.

"It's all just designed to get people out to the island," he notes.

So, by all means, go. But hurry -- or else you'll miss the 100th anniversary celebration. There won't be another one for days.
