Buzz the Fuzz is a yearly fundraiser for California Law

Enforcement's "Wish Upon a Star" program, which caters to the whims of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Volunteers raise

thousands of dollars and then get their heads shaved in a public square

in the blazing sun. Their family members and co-workers take pictures.

It sounds like a form of torture. But it's actually awesome.

Inspector Patrick Cadigan and Lieutenant Lea Militello endured their buzz cuts side by side on a raised platform in Justin Herman Plaza. At one point they held hands. At another, Cadigan smeared Militello's face with shaving cream.

"It's gonna look good," a friend noted approvingly as Cadigan's wife snapped photos of the ordeal. "He has a nice, round

head. You know some people."

other law enforcement officials were appreciating the view and awaiting

their turns. "You know I was platinum blonde as a baby," Officer Dante

Giovanelli remarked, a little wistfully.

Earlier today, Officer Giovanelli was a brunette. Now he has no hair.

It's okay, Officer Giovanelli. SF Weekly thinks the buzz cut brings out your dimples.

assistant district attorney Richard Hechler arrived with a contingent

from the DA's office. Hechler said he raised $7,000, in part by dying

his hair green and promising a photograph of himself with a green

mohawk to anyone who donated more than $100. (Some 37 people decided this

would be worthwhile.)

Unfortunately, SF Weekly  had

to depart before Hechler embarked upon his mohawk adventure, and the

noonday sun left all of our photographs sadly washed out.
