    The Salon Doré

    The Legion of Honor today reopens its incredible French period room, The Salon Doré. The type of room, particular to pre-revolutionary France, was called the salon de compagnie, or salon for conversation. "There was no eating," explains the Legion's curator of European decorative arts and sculpture, Martin Chapman. "They just sat and made conversation and it was the [woman of the house's] ability to hold the conversation. It was a bit like being an actor." Although fake conversations were perfectly acceptable in 1780s France, there's nothing fake about this room — its paint, furniture, paneling, upholstery, and gold gilding have been completely refurbished over the past 18 months. The museum's painstaking efforts have fully restored the room to its original splendor. "When used," Chapman says, "there is a whole orchestration — there's a sort of ballet that plays out in these salons." More

    Wendy Maruyama

    For 35 years, Wendy Maruyama has been making woodworkers weep with her achingly aesthetic furniture and sculptures. In 2008, during a residency in New York, Maruyama began researching Executive Order 9066, which directly affected Maruyama's own family along with other Japanese-Americans interned during World War II. One of the resulting works, The Tag Project, includes 10 swollen bundles — one for every camp — comprising replicas of the 120,000 tags worn around people's necks. Once the enormity subsides, the graceful subtleties and strength of Maruyama's accompanying "cabinets" come into focus. One is built sardonically from a fallen elm tree from the estate of Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, but most incorporate materials from the camps — domestic fragments, barb wire, tar paper. Some are ingrained with camp photographs by Dorothea Lange and Toyo Miyatake, who constructed a camera while interned. Several include racist cartoons, which Miyatake remembers watching in reruns as a child. Maruyama speaks today in conjunction with the exhibit "Executive Order 9066."
