It has been almost 10 years since a beastly 120-pound dog named Bane fatally mauled lacrosse coach Diane Whipple in a Pacific Avenue apartment building while its owner, Marjorie Knoller, did not nearly enough to stop him (or so determined the jury). Knoller's attorney, Dennis Riordan, was in the Court of Appeals on McAllister this morning arguing legal technicalities involved in Knoller's second-degree murder conviction. Yet her co-defendant and husband Robert Noel was a no-show.

Where was he? Turns out after getting convicted of involuntary manslaughter and disbarred as an attorney, Noel now pursues a more rustic profession: Baking.

"I've changed careers and I'm quite happy," Noel told us over the

phone. "I bake for a living. I'm a bread and bagel baker working at a

small operation doing specialty stuff. I'm just a baby baker." He said

the "small operation" is located in the East Bay, but wouldn't give any

more details.

Noel says he starts work in the middle of the

night to bake the morning's bread, so he couldn't make it out to the

9:30 a.m. oral arguments. A judge reinstated the jury's second degree murder conviction

of Knoller two years ago, sentencing her to 15 years to life in prison.

Knoller currently is an inmate at Valley State Prison For Women in

Chowchilla, Noel says, adding that he tries to go visit her "as often as

I can."

As for the couple's bizarre adoption of Aryan

Brotherhood member Paul "Cornfed" Schneider, Noel told us he's still

Cornfed's adoptive father legally, but hasn't contacted him for the last

eight or nine years.

Noel says he could apply for reinstatement

to the state bar, "but, quite frankly, I'm having much more fun doing

what I do." He then waxed poetic about the art of baking. "There is

truth in bread. When you do it right, you know it. When you do it wrong,

you know it, but it still tastes good."

Working as an attorney isn't the only part of Noel's past he's left behind. He no longer has any dogs either.
