BART Votes To Change Station's Name -- But Not Pay For It

Legions of future BART riders will misspell the name of the forthcoming Contra Costa Centre -- yes, Centre --  station following a vote by the transit agency's board of directors yesterday.

The board voted 7-1, with only Carole Ward Allen objecting, to rename Pleasant Hill station Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre. "We've been trying for a long time to create a place around that station

through the joint development we've been doing and direct development," explained BART board member Tom Radulovich prior to the vote. "I

thought 'Contra Costa Centre' sounded a little too much like a business

park. And the 're' bugs me. But that's increasingly what the county,

the businesses, and the residents all call it."

Of course, changing over every map, schedule, and BART's website won't be free. But the money won't ostensibly be coming out of the agency's pocket.

BART priced out the cost of changing the station's name at $413,000. But today's vote was contingent on BART not having to pick up that tab. Agency spokesman Linton Johnson notes that "The entity that wants the name change must pay all costs." That'd be
