Chris Daly Vows To Haunt David Chiu, San Francisco Moderates

The Board of Supervisors is on the precipice of anointing City Administrator Ed Lee interim mayor -- although the decision didn't come without cursing, fights ... and perhaps a little backroom dealing?

The progressives failed in getting their pick -- Sheriff Michael Hennessey -- approved. But they did manage to convince the others to hold off on confirming Lee as the board appointment until Friday, perhaps hoping it would buy them some time to shift the political winds their way -- and turn around an utterly calamitous day.

The eight-and-a-half hour meeting was composed of a heaping portion of political theatrics laced with curious moments, including when Supervisor Bevan Dufty -- a longtime supporter of Hennessey -- pulled an about-face.

Dufty, the expert swing vote, refused to support either Lee or Hennessey, unless there was a deadlock.

Dufty stuck to his word through two rounds of voting. But then he called a 20-minute recess, only to return and pledge his support for Lee, a moderate ally of outgoing Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The move incited Daly; he lashed out at Dufty and Board President David Chiu, who had essentially defected to the moderates with his support for Lee.

"We are about to witness the biggest fumble in history of progressive politics," Daly said. "The ball carrier is none other than our President David Chiu and Bevan played the foil perfectly. We had a progressive majority on this board of supervisors, we had an opportunity and we made the biggest fumble."

His points rapidly turned to threats.

"After this vote, I will politically haunt you," Daly said to Chiu. "It's on like Donkey Kong."

Lee, serendipitously, is purported to be in Hong Kong.

The next round of San Francisco government at its finest reconvenes at 3 p.m. on Friday. Call it "Donkey Kong II."
