UC students studying abroad have been evacuated from Egypt amid the escalating and uncontrolled violence in Cairo. UC President Mark Yudof told the San Francisco Appeal that the students have been taken to Barcelona, Spain.

Yudof said that 19 university students and 13 other adults were in Cairo as part of an abroad program at the American University that was to start Jan. 31. The group included 11 archeologists from Los Angeles who were there for a dig 200 miles from Cairo.

"We are both happy and relieved that they have been delivered from what our overseas contacts described as an unstable situation," Yudof told the Appeal.

The U.S. State Department  issued a travel advisory for American

citizens traveling into Cairo after anti-government protests erupted,

with citizens demanding Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak leave office.
