It was just two weeks ago that Gizmo, a tan Chihuahua wearing a pink sweater, made headlines when his owner was shot while defending his small pooch. While both man and dog survived the shooting, Gizmo's life was tragically cut short last week when he was hit by a car.

Police Capt. Denis O'Leary tells SF Weekly the dog ran across Masonic Avenue as officers tried to arrest six people for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

"It's very upsetting," O'Leary said.

Gizmo had been staying  with a friend of his owner, Michael Stafford, since the Feb. 9 incident when Stafford was shot outside Fred's New Lite Supermarket on Haight Street near Masonic. Stafford had gotten into a fight with one of the store employees who allegedly kicked Gizmo out of the way as he was stacking shelves.

Stafford reportedly yelled at the store clerk, who was later identified as Sam Kazzouh, 42, of Fairfield. As he left the store, Kazzouh allegedly shot Stafford in the back. He has been arrested and charged with three felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon.

On Friday, police were attempting to investigate three men who were standing on the corner of Masonic Avenue and Paige Street at about 1:20 p.m. As they tried to talk to the men, people on the street kept interfering with the investigation, making threats and pushing the cops, O'Leary said.

The chaos on the street escalated, and Gizmo, who was nearby, became frightened of the scene and darted across the street. A driver hit and killed the pup.

"We have a dog at home that looks just like Gizmo," O'Leary said. "Rest in Peace, Gizmo."

The 103rd annual Bay to Breakers 12K race was packed on Sunday despite the cold weather.
