Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30, appeared in a Los Angeles court this morning to answer to charges of mayhem and assault against Bryan Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic, who has been in a coma since the March 31 beating outside Dodger Stadium.

The two men charged with beating Stow, a Giants fan, could face up to nine years in jail if convicted.

According to news reports, LAPD will release more evidence today showing the two men, both of whom are residents of Rialto, east of Los Angeles, attacked Stow.

Court documents revealed gruesome details of the beating, saying that the attackers "did cut and disable the tongue, and put out an eye."

Both men were arrested on Thursday, the same day that Stow was showing signs of improvement. He opened his eyes, mouthed his name, and supposedly gave a thumbs-up, his family said.

Police have told reporters that Sanchez had neck tattoos -- a defining characteristic of one of the attackers in the incident -- when he was arrested for drunken driving in 2005. He lives with his parents six houses away from Norwood, according to media outlets. He also has a son who visits him on weekends.

Norwood and Dorene Sanchez, who was also arrested for being an accessory to the crime, live with three children, including a toddler. Witnesses told police that a child was in the car that the two attackers got into after beating Stow. Police say the child gave them information about the crime.

Court records show both men have a history of domestic violence.

The arrests in this high-profile case was also good news for 31-year-old Giovanni Ramirez, who had been the primary suspect in the attack. Ramirez, who has been in jail for violating his parole, has been exonerated.

San Francisco is not just skin deep to these folks — it's a permanent resident of their bodies and souls. They may be scattered far and wide — everywhere from Bernal Heights to Brooklyn, El Paso, Tokyo, and beyond — but the one thing these self-defined San Franciscans all share is a deep commitment to the city by the Bay.
