California cops are cracking down on "zombie drivers" -- you know who you are, you multitasker drivers who think you can do it all.

Those distracted drivers -- the ones, texting, eating, and reading, etc. while behind the wheel -- have also been responsible for hundreds of deaths over the last few years, according to the Office of Traffic Safety.

The mere act of talking on a cell phone can reduce your much-needed brain activity by more than 35 percent, according to a study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University. This research has given cops up and down the state very good reason to track down what they have dubbed "zombie drivers" during the month of April.

Zombie out the first time, and a citation will cost you at least $159; a second violation will cost you another $279.

And don't think the state isn't planning to take this crackdown seriously. Texting convictions increased 47 percent from 7,924 in 2010 to 14,886 in 2011, according to the OTS. During that same time period, 52,000 citations were issued to distracted drivers across the state, costing residents at least $8 million in one month.

"Parents and other adults need to set a positive example," said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. "Start by never calling or texting anyone -- especially your kids -- when there's a possibility they might be driving. Then let that same action follow you when you are the driver."

Now is a good time to show you how weird this commercial is:

Apparently California officials are confused about what it means to be a corpse brought back to life -- Zombies don't eat cheeseburgers, they eat brains. And if a zombie were to fire off a text while driving, we imagine that message would say "Want 2 C Resident Evil in 3D w/ me?"
