The Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man who shot himself outside the Mission Dolores chapel on Thursday morning as 85-year-old James Olds of San Francisco.

As Mission Local reported last week, Olds was sleeping on the steps in front of the gift shop at Mission Dolores around 7 a.m. when a custodian for the chapel, Raju Kumar, spotted him and told him to "Get up, it's about time."

As Olds got up, Kumar noticed the man's bloody wrist and asked if he was okay.

Kumar then said he noticed a gun inside the Olds' open

umbrella. He stepped back and asked a passerby to call the police.

According to Mission Local:

At that moment the man picked up the gun and pointed it at his head. "Don't do that! don't do that!," Kumar recalls telling the man before he shot himself in the head. Police and other first responders arrived about ten minutes later and took the body.

Police confirmed later that day that Olds' death was a suicide.
