Yesterday we told you that being a local cab driver is about as dangerous as being an unarmed cop. But being a passenger in a cab can also be risky, especially if your cabbie is armed.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, a cab driver picked up his fare and was driving him to the corner of Filbert and Van Ness. En route, the two started arguing for some reason, perhaps over money or directions.

Once they arrived to the destination, the cab driver jumped out of the car and started hitting his 25-year-old passenger in the face with a tire iron, said Officer Albie Esparza.

After giving his fare a good beating, the cabbie jumped back in his taxi and drove off, according to police. The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his forehead and an eye injury.

The cab driver, who is still on the lam, was only described as a 30-year-old Asian man. Police had no more details to offer, including which cab company we should probably avoid.
