A San Francisco jury convicted two men yesterday of  first degree murder, saying they carjacked and killed 51-year-old Winston Coleman as he left a bar in the Bayview three years ago.

District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Sammy D. Frazier, 39, and Timothy Walker, 27, were also convicted of carjacking and conspiracy to commit carjacking. The jury reached the verdict after six days of deliberation.

"This verdict sends a powerful message that we will utilize all available resources to prosecute violent crime in San Francisco," Gascón said. "Our streets are safer because these individuals are off the streets and behind bars for this senseless murder."

On May 31, 2009,  Coleman was leaving Sam Jordan's Bar on Third Street just before 2 a.m. when he was shot in the back, police said. The shooters then stole Coleman's car.

Police arrived and got descriptions of the suspects from witnesses. Officers stopped the suspects about 10 minutes after the shooting, less than two miles from the crime scene.

The cops say they found the gun used to kill Coleman in the back seat of the suspects' car, along with a ski mask, gloves, and other stolen property that came from the victim's SUV.  Officers also found Coleman's vehicle about a block from where the suspects were pulled over. DNA evidence linked Frazier and Walker to the crime scene, according to the DA.

They will be sentenced on Sept. 13.
