What better way to help our young scouts "build character" than to teach them how to effectively discriminate?

As readers probably recall, Tim Griffin, a 22-year-old Eagle Scout, claims he was booted from his job at Camp Winton in Amador County for being gay. Today, the former scout has big plans to deliver a petition with more than 70,000 signatures from people who say they want to see Griffin reinstated.

According to the San Francisco-based petition, 10 other scout leaders resigned in protest of his firing last month, saying they can't work for an employer who treats gays like "second-class citizens."

The petition will be delivered at 10 a.m. to the Golden Empire Council in Sacramento, the entity that fired Girffin.

According to the petition:

Tim was loved not only by his fellow camp staffers, but all of the Boy Scouts who participated in programs he ran at the camp. The Golden Empire Council claims he was fired because he violated the camp's dress code. But as his direct supervisor at the Camp Winton, I know this isn't true. He was fired because of his sexual orientation. The men who fired Tim haven't even stepped foot on Camp Winton this summer.

The Council claims he was fired not for being gay, but for "violating the dress code," specifically painting his fingernails and wearing earrings, and other gay-like things.

Although California law prohibits firing someone for their sexuality, the Boy Scouts of America successfully managed to dodge that rule, and is allowed to fire gays simply for being gay. The LGBT community is in good company, since the Scouts also ban atheists and agnostics.

So if you like Boy Scouts and you like gays, feel free to add your John Hancock to this petition while there's still time.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas.
