Beware: Blue-Tape Bandits Stick Ingleside Homes

Posted By on Tue, Aug 21, 2012 at 1:21 PM

We're not sure about you, but when we think of burglars, we tend to imagine a desperate dude (possibly drunk) making his way into a home, grabbing the loot, and making a run for it in an unidentified car.

What we don't expect is for a successful burglary to be carried out by someone like Shy Ronnie. But that's who came to mind when we read about this recent Bernal Heights burglary brouhaha.

As the badass Bernalwood Press warns today, some burglar hopefuls have been sticking small pieces of blue painter's tape on the front doors of Ingleside homes. One Bernal Heights neighbor suggested that this was a sneaky attempt by these thieves to "monitor who is at home and who's out on vacation."

And these are patient and persistent wannabe burglars, who will hit (or shall we say stick) the same house repeatedly. "Over the last week or two we noticed little pieces of painter's tape attached to our front door," one Coleridge neighbor wrote.

Officer Albie Esparza tells us he's not surprised to hear about this trick. "Criminals are very creative in trying to see if people are home," he said.

And perhaps it's working: There has been a 23 percent increase in Ingleside burglaries over the last year, Esparza said.

Here are some tips on how to outsmart these calculating criminals.

  • Get automatic lights
  • Tell your neighbors and friends when you're on vacation so they can keep an eye on your house.
  • Alert police if you're taking a vacation, and, much to our surprise, they'll meander down your street more often.

Naturally, this news generated some equally crafty comments from local readers.

Well, you know how much Bernal Heights folks love to resolve neighborhood issues by leaving passive-aggressive notes.
