A San Francisco man was fatally hit by a truck as he darted across Cesar Chavez Street early this morning.

The accident shut down local streets for several hours, according to police.

The victim -- who has not yet been identified -- had been walking about 12:30 a.m. when he ran across the road in front of a Nissan pickup truck traveling southbound from Potrero Avenue near Bayshore Boulevard, according to police.

The operator of the truck, only described as a 25-year-old San Francisco woman, stopped the car and has been cooperating with police. She had a passenger in her truck at the time of the accident; however, neither were injured.

The victim, a male in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police arrested the woman on suspicion of driving under the influence. Witnesses are asked to

contact the SFPD Hit and Run Detail at 553-1641.
