While San Francisco will spend more than $200,000 on condoms next year to ensure we're all stockpiled with rubbers, students at UC Merced reportedly got a spanking for hosting a much-desired sex toy event on campus.

And that's the one of the many differences between the Central Valley and the Bay Area.

The student group, H.E.R.O.E.S., that sponsored the event was criticized for wasting student fees after sponsoring the sex toy seminar. The group has a yearly budget of $66,000.

They caught flak after conservative groups around town began questioning whether public money should have been spent to sponsor the event in light of the ongoing budget crisis.

The event titled, "Is There a Buzz in Your Bed," was designed to teach students about various sex toys and how to use them either alone or as a couple. Organizers first came to San Francisco (of course) for a half-day's training before returning to the Central Valley to pass on what they learned.

Aside from the criticism, the event appears to have been a success; it drew some 30 participants and presenters who seemed to have learned a lot. Never mind their critics, the group has decided to carry on and is hosting a condom design contest.

Not surprisingly, school officials didn't want to talk with us about it.
