Because it's that time of the year when bunnies tend to fuck like the rabbits, animals shelters are overloaded with one too many cottontails.

And that's where you come in.

On Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the animal-loving folks at the Peninsula Humane Society are asking you to come down to the shelter and get your hands on their buns. In translation, that means come adopt a damn bunny already.

The rabbit extravaganza will feature dozens of rabbits in need of a brush and a old sofa to chew on; so here's your carrot: The shelter is offering 50 percent off regular adoption fees, which means you can bring your bunny home for $20 instead of $40. You will also get 10 percent off starter kits for rabbits, which may or may not include a ball of hay and some sort of carrot-like toys.

If you think bunnies are cute, but you don't actually know a thing about then, bunny specialists (yes, those people) will be on hand Sunday to teach you and your irresponsible children how to be responsible for your new family member. Hint: You will need to understand house-training rabbit rituals, including how to massage your bunny (!).

If you are looking for a companion for your rabbit, shelter staff encourage you to bring your bunny to the event so both rabbits can do a meet-and-greet with some supervision.

Just so you know, bunnies live for 12 years, so make sure you (or your kid) is in it for the long haul.

So if you're looking for an early Easter present, head down to the Peninsula Humane Society on the second floor of our Center for Compassion, 1450 Rollins Rd. in Burlingame.
