For some of us, the doctor-recommended daily cardio consists of "running" to the corner store for cigarettes.

Which makes Richard Nares' story all that much more inspiring. After reading about this local man's plan to run 700 miles from San Francisco to San Diego, you might feel compelled to put on your running shoes (where are those damn things anyhow?)

Nares founded the Emilio Nares Foundation in 2002, two years after his son, Emilio, died of pediatric cancer. As Nares tells the story, Emilio watched the runners in the Boston marathon from his window in the hospital where he was undergoing a bone marrow transplant more than 10 years ago.

It was then that Richard promised his son he would one day run the city's famous race. Nares has since completed the epic Boston race three times.

Needless to say, he's taken a deep liking to running.

On Saturday, while you are sleeping in (lazy!), Nares will start his 30-day, 700-mile run to San Diego, where he hopes to raise $75,000 for child cancer. He will begin his journey at the Golden Gate Bridge at 9 a.m., and the public is invited to join him in first hour-long chapter of his fund-raising efforts, which will finish at Aquatic Park at 10 a.m.

Nares is hoping that when his Nikes land in San Diego, he will have raised money and increased awareness about this harrowing disease.

In his own words:

"I will run 700 miles to generate awareness and much-needed funds so that our non-profit organization can provide programs and services for low-income, underprivileged families whose children are battling leukemia and other childhood cancer. If my son could be so courageous during his illness, then I can and will find the strength to run from San Francisco to San Diego in 30 days so that we can help more families whose children are fighting cancer."

As Nares traverses the coast of California, he will also be donating "Loving Tabs" shirts to children's hospitals. The shirts provide easy access to a child's port ache when receiving chemo treatment.

If you feel like getting in on the this feel-good fight, then register to run with Richard by buying (and wearing) a "Richard Runs California" shirt for $30.

So try to get up before 9 a.m. for a change and go support Richard while he shows the rest of us how it's done.
