Robert Guerrero fared better against the New York State justice system than he did against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Today, in a court in Queens County, a judge dismissed gun-possession charges against the four-division champion. Instead, Guerrero pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a violation that carried a $250 fine and 50 hours of community service.

The original charges stemmed from a March 28 incident at JFK International Airport, in which Guerrero alerted a ticket agent that the luggage he was checking in contained a Smith & Wesson M&P .40-caliber handgun and three unloaded magazines. The gun was kept inside a safe box and Guerrero brought no ammunition.

The gun, however, was registered in California, but not in New York. And New York has some of the strictest gun control laws in America. The gun-possession charges carried a maximum sentence of four years in prison. Guerrero was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

He had been in New York to promote his May 4 fight with Mayweather, which he lost by unanimous decision. The incident came as the Gilroy native was about to return to California.

"I never intended to violate New York law, but I know that ignorance of the law is not an excuse," Guerrero said in a statement today. "Lesson learned."
