Sad news for the running community: Over the weekend 63-year-old Rene Brunet died while running a race on Mt. Diablo.

According to press reports, the avid runner was participating in the Mt. Diablo Trail Run when he suddenly died. The race included an 8, 25,or 50-kilometer race.

The Contra Costa County Coroner has nor yet determined the cause of death.

According to the Chron, Brunet, a San Francisco man, began running at 8:30 a.m. and was on track to finish in nine hours, the time allotted for the race. Staffers tracked his progress along the way, but when he never crossed the finish line, they went looking for him.

They found his body about three miles from the finish line.

"He disappeared between the last checkpoint and the finish line," John Brooks, director of Sunday's race told the Chron . "I had seen him in the morning, a couple of times during the day, and he was in great spirits. At the last checkpoint, he told people he was doing great."
