A 40-something-year-old man is in clinging to life this morning after he was beaten with a bottle last night while reportedly sticking up for his sister who had been a victim of a crime.

Officer Gordon Shyy says all the details came from a witness who claims two men pulled up in a car and stopped at Gough and Golden Gate Avenue. Both the men hopped out of the car and approached the victim, who reportedly shouted: "You robbed my sister."

One of the men took a bottle and hit the victim over the head. The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he is suffering from a life-threatening head injury.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
