There's a new twist to the story about the Dodgers fan who was stabbed to death Wednesday night: The suspect's father spoke to the press, claiming his son, 21-year-old Michael Montgomery, stabbed the victim out of "self defense."

Montgomery, a Lodi resident, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of killing 24-year-old Jonathan Denver, a Dodgers fan who was in town from Fort Bragg watching the game with his father.

Martin Montgomery told the Chron that his son was attacked first by Denver and that he only pulled his knife to protect himself from him. According to the older Montgomery, who did not witness the incident, but has talked to his son, Michael Montgomery was walking with some friends by AT&T Park when another group passing by said something mean about the Giants.

That's when the fight broke out.

"Someone said 'S.F. sucks,' or whatever, and the kid with the Giants hat said something to the effect that 'No, they're the stuff,' or whatever, and then the altercation really broke out," Martin Montgomery said.

According to him, Denver tossed a chair, hitting the younger Montgomery in the head. "My son defended himself," he tells the newspaper. "That's all it was. Everybody's making it look like it was a team rivalry, but really it was two kids walking."

Denver was stabbed at Third and Harrison streets at about 11:29 p.m., nearly two hours after the Giants and the Dodgers had ended their game. Police say the two groups of men had bumped into each other at a bar earlier and that the confrontation carried over into the street. Montgomery and an 18-year-old were detained the following day. Police say Montgomery made some "incriminating statements" which led to his arrest. He was booked into San Francisco County Jail and charged with homicide.

"He is in shock. He is just freaking out," Michael's mother, Victoria, told NBC News.
